Underwear, undergarments, unmentionables, lingerie, intimate apparel, knickers or frillies – call them what you will – these tiny but incredibly enticing items of clothing just about make the world go round, and it seems we’ve been obsessed with them since humans began walking the earth!

In their earliest incarnations, frillies were actually very generic loincloths: pieces of fabric passed between the legs and tied around the hips in order to hide our most private parts from view.  These pieces of fabric evolved into hoses or loose-fitting trousers for men, and a shift (sometimes referred to as a chemise or smock) for women.

Women’s undergarments continued to advance – petticoats were introduced, followed by the dreaded corset (earliest forms were called stays).  By the nineteenth century, underwear technology had grown to include pantaloons, crinolines and bustles – all aimed at creating particular shapes under the dress (curvy bell shaped waists or full-skirts).  Long-johns and jock-straps were also invented in the nineteenth century and became popular for support and warmth.

The twentieth century saw most of the underwear inventions that we are still familiar with today.  Amongst them were the introduction of the undershirt and drawers, the camisole, bloomers, stockings, garter belts, girdles, boxer shorts, panty-hose, and of course the bra.

Of course, when most people think about the slightly naughty, forbidden, tempting idea of underwear or frillies, what they really have in mind is women’s lingerie and undergarments.  Its little surprise why – the industry for women’s underwear is big business, with celebrities and fashion labels alike making a fortune from a global obsession.  Models (Elle McPherson), singers (Kylie Minogue) and countless other famous women have contributed designs – some practical, some comfortable, and some down-right kinky!  There are also frequent innovations that make women’s underwear quite a complicated maze of wire and straps – back- or front-fastening bras, strapless bras, push-up bras, maternity bras, minimizing bras, halter-neck bras, slimming or supporting underwear, flesh-coloured underwear… you name it, it’s been invented.  Recently the market has seen enhancing-underwear for men become popular as well!

The other fantastic thing about frillies is that there is such a huge variety of designs – you can pick a brand that suits you and treat yourself every now and then to a new purchase.  WonderBra, Playtex, Triumph, La Senza, Allure, and Agent Provocateur – it’s not hard to find quality underwear at any price.

Whether you’re planning a special occasion (a big night out, a Hen’s night, or perhaps your honeymoon) or looking to buy a present for that special someone, frillies are definitely a must.   Most people wear them – it might as well be enjoyable and fun.  You never know who might see you in a state of undress!
